Paint and exterior
The K5 has a long fastback roof, Z-shaped running lights and a bright window trim strip that sweeps back along the roofline and spots from hard water. Dark colors show swirls on the long hood and roof.
Interior
Cloth or SynTex on most K5s and leather on top Optimas. The K5's wraparound dash mixes soft-touch and glossy trim, and the low fastback makes the inside of the rear window awkward to reach.
Living in Houston
Older Optimas left outside at Houston apartments have faded dashboards, dull clear coat on the roof and trunk, and yellowed headlights. Newer K5s mostly need careful washing to keep swirls off dark paint.
- Soft clear coat: it marks from a dirty towel or an automatic wash, so every wash is two-bucket with clean mitts, and polishing finishes down with a fine pad.
- Lots of chrome: Houston hard water etches it, so it is dried fully, polished where needed and sealed.
- Older plastic headlights yellow in the sun: headlight restoration is an add-on worth asking about.
- Black and dark colors are common: they show swirls, water spots and pollen film first, and benefit most from a coating.
