Paint and exterior

A compact hatch with a roof spoiler over the rear glass that collects grime. Golf R owners often choose Lapiz Blue, which shows swirls in direct sun, and red and black GTIs show them too. Many wear PPF on the front.

Interior

Plaid cloth on most GTIs, leather on upper trims and Nappa sport seats in the R. The Mk8 swaps many buttons for touch sliders and glossy panels that need careful cleaning.

Living in Houston

GTIs and Rs often double as weekend cars driven hard, so brake dust bakes onto the wheels and tar collects behind the rear wheels. Garage-kept cars still gather construction dust in new Katy communities.

• Hard clear coat: swirls take more cutting to remove, so correction is slower, but a corrected finish holds up well afterwards.
• Often wears PPF or a wrap: film edges get a coating-safe wash, no clay on the film, and the film can be ceramic coated too.
• Piano-black trim: it scratches if you look at it, so it gets plush microfiber only and can be polished and coated.
• Cloth seats on many trims: spot-treated in every interior detail, with shampoo extraction as an add-on when they need it.
• Large wheels and tall tires: wheel faces, barrels and wells take real time on this one, and it shows when they are done right.
