A tall, square-shouldered body with Thor's hammer headlights, a wide grille and bright window trim on many. The roof is high and long, and dark colors show water spots on the hood and the large tailgate.

Interior

Seven seats with a third row that folds flat, leather or Nappa, wool blend options, open-pore wood and a crystal gear selector on some trims. The crystal and the wood are cleaned gently, with no glossy dressing.

Living in Houston

XC90s do school runs, Costco trips and weekends at Lake Conroe. Summer heat in parking lots dries light leather, and spring pollen packs into the cowl and around the roof rails.

• Third row and cargo area: both are included, which is why three-row vehicles sit in the larger size class.
• Family hauler: car-seat areas, cupholders and seat rails hold the most crumbs; pet hair is an add-on quoted on the call.
• Light-colored seats are popular: denim dye transfer and sunscreen stains are cleaned early, before they set in the heat.
• Nappa or fine-grain leather: cleaned with a pH-balanced leather cleaner and a soft brush, then a non-greasy conditioner.
• Lots of chrome: Houston hard water etches it, so it is dried fully, polished where needed and sealed.
• Large glass roof: Houston water leaves mineral spots on it, so it is cleaned inside and out and suits the glass coating add-on.
