Paint and exterior

A compact SUV with a sloping rear window, bright trim around the grille and windows, and roof rails. The tailgate's bright strip spots quickly, and black and Denim Blue show swirls on the hood.

Interior

Leather in light and dark shades, open-pore driftwood on some trims, and a crystal shifter on the plug-in hybrids. The portrait screen collects fingerprints, and the rear door pockets hold sand and wrappers.

Living in Houston

XC60s parked at Energy Corridor offices bake in summer, so light leather and the dash take the heat. On weekends they collect sand and wet towels from trips to Surfside.

• Light-colored seats are popular: denim dye transfer and sunscreen stains are cleaned early, before they set in the heat.
• Nappa or fine-grain leather: cleaned with a pH-balanced leather cleaner and a soft brush, then a non-greasy conditioner.
• Lots of chrome: Houston hard water etches it, so it is dried fully, polished where needed and sealed.
• Large glass roof: Houston water leaves mineral spots on it, so it is cleaned inside and out and suits the glass coating add-on.
• Large touchscreens: cleaned with a screen-safe, ammonia-free product and a dedicated cloth.
