Paint and exterior

Older GX 460s wear plenty of chrome and conservative colors; the GX 550 brought boxier panels, Earth and Nori Green Pearl colors and lots of black trim. The side-hinged rear door has seals that hold dirt.

Interior

Leather or semi-aniline in tan, black or brown, with a third row in many trucks. The older cabin has wood trim and a small screen; the new one has a wide screen, chunky switches and rubberized storage.

Living in Houston

GX owners in Katy and Cypress often tow small trailers or head to the beach at Bolivar, so sand and salt film build up on the lower body and in the rear door seals.

• Sees dirt roads and lease land: mud is softened and rinsed before any mitt touches the paint, and wheel wells are cleaned out.
• Third row and cargo area: both are included, which is why three-row vehicles sit in the larger size class.
• Lots of chrome: Houston hard water etches it, so it is dried fully, polished where needed and sealed.
• Tows and hauls: hitch, rear bumper and the lower panels collect road tar and brake dust, so they get iron remover and tar remover.
