Paint and exterior

A short, upright body with dark trim around the wheel arches on many cars. The rear hatch is nearly vertical, so road spray coats the glass and the top of the bumper, and the roof is low enough to wash properly without a step.

Interior

Leather or leatherette seats, a sliding rear bench on the second generation, and plenty of hard plastic in the doors that scuffs from shoes. With car seats or a dog in a car this size, most of the wear lands on the rear bench.

Living in Houston

Q3s often live in master-planned neighborhoods where new houses are still going up, so fine construction dust settles on the paint and works into the door seals. It is rinsed off, never wiped off dry.

• Hard clear coat: swirls take more cutting to remove, so correction is slower, but a corrected finish holds up well afterwards.
• Family hauler: car-seat areas, cupholders and seat rails hold the most crumbs; pet hair is an add-on quoted on the call.
• Unpainted textured trim: it fades grey in the sun, so it is cleaned and dressed with a matte UV protectant.
