Most Q5s are white, gray, black or blue, and the dark ones show swirls from years of tunnel washes. The roof and the top of the tailgate get washed least carefully, and the textured lower trim on base cars fades in the sun. SQ5s often run larger wheels that collect heavy brake dust.

Interior

Leather is standard, often black or brown, with gloss black trim around the screen and gear selector. Second-row seats slide and recline on many cars, so the rails collect a lot, and the cargo floor takes sports gear and grocery spills.

Living in Houston

Q5s are daily drivers that park outside at school pickup and the office, so spring pollen, love bugs in May and hard water from sprinklers all land on the same car every week.

• Hard clear coat: swirls take more cutting to remove, so correction is slower, but a corrected finish holds up well afterwards.
• Black and dark colors are common: they show swirls, water spots and pollen film first, and benefit most from a coating.

• Unpainted textured trim: it fades grey in the sun, so it is cleaned and dressed with a matte UV protectant.
