Long, low panels and plenty of chrome on older cars, then an aluminum body from 2004. Older dark XJs often need correction on the roof and trunk, and the chrome bumpers and grille need sealing against hard water.
Interior
Wood veneer across the dash and doors, soft leather and thick carpets. On older cars the leather dries and cracks and the lacquer on the wood can lift, so heat is the enemy.
Living in Houston
Older XJs are often garaged and driven to church, dinner or the club on weekends; a few hours in an unshaded summer lot does more harm to the leather and wood than months in the garage.
- Lots of chrome: Houston hard water etches it, so it is dried fully, polished where needed and sealed.
- Black and dark colors are common: they show swirls, water spots and pollen film first, and benefit most from a coating.
- Older plastic headlights yellow in the sun: headlight restoration is an add-on worth asking about.
