Paint and exterior

A coupe-like roofline, a long trunk lid and chrome window trim on many cars. The roof and trunk carry the most sun damage, and dark colors show swirls and water spots once the car has lived outside.

Interior

Leather or synthetic seats, wood or gloss black veneer, and a rotary gear selector that rises from the console at start-up. The vents on first-generation cars rotate open, and dust collects behind them.

Living in Houston

XFs often commute from Sugar Land or Katy into downtown on US 59 or I-10 and sit outside all day, so the dash and rear shelf bake and the leather dries out without regular conditioning.

• Black and dark colors are common: they show swirls, water spots and pollen film first, and benefit most from a coating.
• Lots of chrome: Houston hard water etches it, so it is dried fully, polished where needed and sealed.
• Piano-black trim: it scratches if you look at it, so it gets plush microfiber only and can be polished and coated.
