The falcon-wing doors expose large painted areas and seals that most car washes never reach. The huge windshield sweeps up into the roof and collects water spots; it suits the glass coating add-on.

Interior

Six or seven seats, light interiors common, and second-row seats on a pedestal that are easy to clean underneath. The door seals and the falcon-door hinges are wiped down by hand.

Living in Houston

In Sugar Land and Katy the Model X is a school-run car; the windshield gets hard water from sprinklers and the doors get handprints from kids at every pickup line.

• Soft clear coat: it marks from a dirty towel or an automatic wash, so every wash is two-bucket with clean mitts, and polishing finishes down with a fine pad.
• Large glass roof: Houston water leaves mineral spots on it, so it is cleaned inside and out and suits the glass coating add-on.
• Light-colored seats are popular: denim dye transfer and sunscreen stains are cleaned early, before they set in the heat.
• Third row and cargo area: both are included, which is why three-row vehicles sit in the larger size class.
• Family hauler: car-seat areas, cupholders and seat rails hold the most crumbs; pet hair is an add-on quoted on the call.
• Electric: there is no engine bay, but the frunk, charge port door and underbody plastics get cleaned, and washing an EV is completely safe.
